Ear curette tips should be chosen based on the age/size of the patient (and their ear canal), as well as the different types/consistencies of earwax. See below for general curette guidelines:
Children:
Most children tend to have softer wax that is usually easily removed with a loop-type curette. Here are the recommended curette tips for children:
- VersaLoop is sized right for smaller ear canals
- InfantScoop is for very small ear canals that have a more gooey wax
- MicroLoop is an excellent general-purpose loop for removing children's ear wax
Adults:
Adults - especially the elderly - tend to have hard, impacted wax and often require a stiffer curette for wax removal. Some adults are heavy wax-producers and need repeated wax removal. This is especially true for those with hearing aids, which obstruct the wax from naturally exuding from the ear canal. Here are the recommended curette tips for adults:
- AngleLoop is best used to remove harder ear wax in adults
- FlexLoop is a larger loop, popular and versatile for general adult use
- MicroLoop is a smaller, general -purpose loop for adults with smaller ear canals, and is especially effective on harder ear wax
